“Masipag yan at saka maganda grades niya,” Renato, who lost his son in a brutal robbery and homicide, recalled fondly in an interview with DZMM. “Ilang taon na lang, tapos na mag architect[ure] ito. Malapit na lang sana.”
Nick Russel Oniot was just making his way home to Barangay Central Signal Village from Adamson University in Manila, where he is completing a degree in Architecture.
The two suspects were caught—one was killed by police for attempting to escape while the other one died in jail.
But what’s even more upsetting, Renato confided, was the lack of compassion towards his son after the attack.
Bleeding, Nick still tried to ask for help but his injuries proved to be too much for the young boy and he fell onto the pavement where he remained unmoving, according to the CCTV footage.
“Pati yung pinarang sasakyan, ‘di man lang hinintuan. Walang nagmalasakit…”
The CCTV footage captured how motorists and one male bystander didn’t stop to help the young boy who was bleeding profusely from the 18 stab wounds he sustained during the attack.
“Pati yung pinarang sasakyan, ‘di man lang hinintuan. Walang nagmalasakit,” lamented the dad. He also expressed disappointment that the barangay center was 100 meters away and anyone could have easily called for help.
The CCTV, which captured the crime, was installed by the barangay and had it been monitored closely, then his son might have been rescued in time.
“Mabagal yung proseso pagdating sa CCTV. Kasi yung CCTV, kung may naka-monitor lang dun madali lang takbuhin yun e. I-radyo kagad, takbuhin ng motor yun di aabutin ng isang minuto baka maligtas pa anak ko,” he confided in DZMM. “Maabutan pa yung nag-aagawan sila ng bag.”
Still, Renato refuses to keep assigning blame.
“Wala nang sisihan. Nangyari na. Sana wala nang susunod pa na mangyayari,” he said.
It always pays to be extra careful but sometimes letting our guard down could save a life. If you spot an injured stranger, make sure to call for help before approaching them.
