A lot of parents feel that being too close, or being best friends with their child isn’t a good thing. Some say that being best friends with your child might make your child think that your child won’t respect you as a parent, since you treat each other as friends.

However, you’ll be surprised to know that being your child’s best friend is actually the way to go!

It builds trust and respect

Being best friends with your child actually builds more trust and respect in your relationship. This is because by being best friends, you start to learn more about each other; your child’s nuances and quirks, etc. They in turn also learn more about how you are, not just as a parent, but as a human being.

This helps develop trust between the both of you since you’ll be familiar with each other’s behavior, and you’ll have an open relationship. This also helps develop respect, as your child would not want to do anything that will hurt your feelings, since you’re one of their closest friends.

It helps you set rules and limits better

Additionally, it also helps you set rules and limits for your child better, because if your child respects you, they’ll also respect the boundaries that you provide at home.

Knowing your child better would also help you set rules that you know your child would follow, since you have a deeper insight into their personality.

Of course, when it’s time to discipline your child, being their best friend also helps as you can better explain why you’re disciplining them, as well as what behavior you didn’t approve of.

Your child can help you cope with your problems.

Surprisingly, you can even get good advice from your children. Sometimes, adults get too caught up in their problems and responsibilities, that it can be overwhelming at times.

Being open with your kids and sharing how your day went, what your problems are, etc. can sometimes yield amazing results. Kids have a different way of thinking, and they can sometimes share insight that’s wise beyond their years. And showing your kids your more “vulnerable” side makes them feel that you’re just like them, struggling with problems and feelings.

This openness lets your children feel closer to you since they can understand your feelings better, and they can empathize with you.

However, the most important thing to remember is to not force it. Just let it come naturally, and even if you don’t become best friends with your child, the important thing is you become closer to each other.
