Today, many people seem to be preferring soy milk as an alternative to cow’s milk. The popularity of this beverage is on the rise after “vegan diets” have stepped into prominence. “Soy milk, also known as soya milk, is a plant milk produced by soaking, mixing and grinding dried soybeans  in water,” says Kanika Malhotra, senior clinical nutritionist, Healthcare at Home, Delhi.

However, irrespective of whether you go vegan, soy milk is said to have great health benefits, when consumed judiciously. We tell you why soy milk is a great addition to your refrigerator.

Soy milk is high quality protein source

Soy is said to be a complete protein source as it contains all nine essential amino acids. “The milk from soyabeans contains only vegetable proteins which cause less loss of calcium through the kidneys,” adds Malhotra.

Soy milk improves blood lipid profile

This plant derivative contains zero cholesterol and hence improves blood lipid profile. It is also a valuable source of omega-3 fatty acids, which greatly help in lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

It can be of help if you are trying to achieve weight loss. However, only the no-sugar and no-taste versions will help you achieve the goal.

Soy milk is rich in Isoflavones

The presence of isoflavones is the most unique benefit of this beverage. Isoflavones have many health benefits including reduction of cholesterol, easing menopause symptoms, prevention of osteoporosis and reduction of risk for cancers like prostate cancer and breast cancer.

Soy milk has zero lactose content

For those who are lactose intolerant, soy milk is a blessing! “A lactose intolerant adult can fulfil the nutrient requirements received from milk by drinking 2-3 glasses of soy milk in a day,” informs Malhotra.

Soy milk helps boost immunity

Soy milk contains prebiotic sugars, stachyose and raffinose, which help in boosting immunity and in lowering down the toxic substances present in the body.

Intake of soy milk depends on the requirement of an individual. A normal person can have 1 glass a day of soy milk. “250ml of soy milk has about 100-130 calories,” informs Malhotra.
