Braces During Pregnancy: Safety & Dental Care Tips For Pregnant Moms

Undergoing orthodontic treatment such as braces or clear aligners to correct crooked teeth or improper bite is generally safe for pregnant women. Pregnancy hormones may cause slight loosening of teeth, which could make them more prone to movement. However, it is important for pregnant women to consult with their dentists and orthodontists before undergoing any treatment.

Additionally, the American Dental Association recommends that pregnant women have preventive exams and cleanings during pregnancy, and to inform their dentists of their pregnancy. Non-emergency dental work should be postponed until the second trimester, and pregnant women should maintain good oral hygiene by brushing their teeth twice a day with pregnancy-safe toothpaste and flossing daily.

It is important to note that every pregnancy is unique and individual circumstances may vary. Pregnant women should always consult with their healthcare providers before undergoing any dental treatment. This is to ensure the safety of both mother and baby.

Dental care tips for women with braces

Here are some dental care tips for pregnant women with braces:

  1. Inform your dentist and orthodontist that you are pregnant before undergoing any dental or orthodontic treatment.
  2. Continue with routine dental care during pregnancy, including dental cleanings and exams.
  3. Delay non-emergency dental procedures until the second trimester or after delivery.
  4. Brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and pregnancy-safe toothpaste and floss daily to maintain good oral hygiene.
  5. Wear a mouthguard if you are doing some exercise or activities to prevent dental injuries while wearing braces.
  6. Avoid sugary foods and drinks that can increase the risk of cavities.
  7. Take care of yourself by eating a balanced diet and getting enough rest during pregnancy, which can also benefit your dental health.
