Why opt for a water birth?
Nowadays, having a water birth is a viable option for many mothers.
A water birth is a more ‘natural’ form of giving birth. It involves using a birthing pool, or a tub filled with water, where the mother sits until she gives birth.
The process is all natural, and doesn’t make use of any forms of anesthesia or medication. However, there are risks involved in all kinds of childbirth. So it is still recommended for moms to only have a water birth in hospitals or facilities that are fully equipped to handle this type of birth.
A lot of moms opt to have a water birth these days since, aside from being more natural, it gives them an increased sense of closeness with their child. It also lowers the risks that can sometimes be caused by anesthesia and medication.
There are many positive aspects to water births, but they are not without risks. Here are some common problems you should be aware of:
- The mother or the baby could get an infection.
- The umbilical cord could snap before the baby comes out of the water.
- The baby’s body temperature could be unstable. It may be too high or too low.
- Babies can’t breathe in the bath water.
- The baby can have seizures or difficulty breathing.
As always, the best thing would be to consult your doctor about your options during your pregnancy. It’s also important to look for a good hospital that offers water birth so that you can avoid any complications.
In some cases, a water birth may need to be stopped since a C-section has to be performed in order to save the baby. It’s a good idea to go to a reputable hospital or facility to get the experience of a water birth and professional healthcare for mom and baby.
