Carrie Fisher's quotes remind us that the force is always with us

Carrie Fisher, 60, recently passed away because of a heart attack. She leaves behind not only her film legacy, but also the legacy of a loving mother.

If you haven’t heard the news, Carrie Fisher, the actress who played the iconic role of Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, has sadly passed away. She leaves behind a legacy of portraying strong and independent women in film, but most of all, she leaves behind the legacy of a loving mother.

At December 27, 2016, 8:55 am PST, Carrie Fisher died because of a heart attack. She was only 60 years old. She leaves behind her daughter, actress Billie Lourd, and a wealth of amazing and outspoken quotes that remind us how important motherhood was to her.

Here are just a few nuggets of wisdom from the late and great Carrie Fisher:

“What’s happening twitter asks? My daughter Billie Lourd from Scream Queens. She’s MUCH more than my kid. Witty & pretty, I aspire 2 deserve her”

Carrie’s daughter, Billie, from a previous marriage, currently stars in the hit series “Scream Queens.” And her character in the series pays homage to Princess Leia’s buns by wearing ear muffs at all times. She also played the role in Lieutenant Connix in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, and yup, she’s sporting buns just like her mom’s hairstyle back in the day.

Like mother, like daughter right?

Here’s another awesome quote, this time she was asked by The Wall Street Journal about the gold bikini that she wore in Star Wars:

The father who flipped out about [the bikini], ‘What am I going to tell my kid about why she’s in that outfit?’ Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.

Wow! So fierce, and it’s such a powerful message. For those who don’t know, Carrie Fisher is not just an actress, she’s also an outspoken feminist, and was also vocal about her mental health, as well as her struggle with cocaine addiction. She also acted as a ‘mama bear’ to a lot of child actors who were struggling with a lot of problems.

“That’s my way of surviving,” she says. “To abstract it into something that’s funny and not dangerous.”

It’s no secret that Carrie Fisher has struggled with bipolar disorder, and in order to cope with her condition, she decided to use comedy as a means of coping with the illness.

She’s also outspoken regarding mental illness, and removing the stigma that’s associated with people who struggle with it. She wrote about her experiences in her autobiography “The Princess Diarist.”

And here she is, joking about her most iconic role:

I am Princess Leia, no matter what. If I were trying to get a good table, I wouldn’t say I wrote Postcards. Or, if I’m trying to get someone to take my check and I don’t have ID, I wouldn’t say: ‘Have you seen Harry Met Sally?’ Princess Leia will be on my tombstone.

She’s very aware that out of all her roles in cinema, no other role can trump Princess Leia, and she just takes it all in stride, even poking fun at the fact that her other roles weren’t as popular or as well received as the princess. She also used her popularity to speak and write for women’s rights.

Her character was more than just a princess waiting to be rescued, Princess Leia, just like Carrie, is a fighter who is willing to make sacrifices and take matters into her own hands for the greater good.
