Caught on CCTV: 4 men beat up and rob student

9 May, 2017

19-year-old student Andrew Merez was walking home with his girlfriend in Sampaloc, Manila, when a group of 4 men on motorcycles suddenly came up to the couple and started beating Andrew.

The suspects also stole his money and a necklace

On the CCTV video, the men can be seen passing by the couple as they were walking home at around 3am in the morning. A few minutes after, the men turned back, stopped, and attacked Andrew.

His girlfriend was desperately trying to stop the brutal assault, but the men didn’t stop. At one point in the video, one of the men punched Andrew so hard that he was thrown to the sidewalk from the impact.

After the attack, the suspects also stole Andrew’s money and a necklace.

He was beat up on a whim

According to one of the suspects, Abner Gagarin, a criminology student who was caught by the police, his friends coerced him into joining them to beat up the victim.

Thankfully, Merez didn’t suffer from any severe or permanent injury from the attack.

However, Merez’s family will be pressing charges against all of the suspects for grave physical injuries as well as robbery.

Always be careful

These days, you can never be too careful, especially late at night. Even more so for your kids, who might be going out with their friends and going home late.

Which is why it’s important to make sure that your kids are always safe. Here are some helpful reminders for kids:

  1. Whenever possible, they should never stay out late at night.
  2. Always keep a cellphone handy, in case of any emergency.
  3. When going out, they should always tell you where they’re going.
  4. Ask your kids to send you a text whenever they’ve arrived at their destination, and when they’re about to go home.
  5. Make sure to get to know your child’s friends, and make sure your child chooses their friends well.
