Children below 18 are now banned from boarding motorcycles

19 May, 2017
Children below 18 are now banned from boarding motorcycles

Motorcycle riders who have small children riding with them will now be apprehended,

What is Republic Act No. 10666?

Republic Act No. 10666, or the Children’s Safety on Motorcycles Act of 2015, motorcycle riders are not allowed to have small children with them on roads with a speed limit of 60 kph or more. Under the act, only children who can reach the foot peg and embrace the driver’s waist will be allowed to ride. Child passengers are also required to wear helmets while riding the motorcycle.

Additionally, children riding in front of the motorcycle is also not allowed.

However, there can be some exceptions to the law, such as during emergencies.

For the first offense, violators will have to pay 3,000 pesos, 5,000 pesos for the second offense, and 10,000 pesos as well as a one-month suspension of their license for the third offense. Those caught past the third offense will have their driver’s license revoked.

Additionally, in cases of accidents that cause death to a child passenger, the driver will be imprisoned for one year, in addition to the penalties they will receive.

Motorcycle safety is important

For a lot of people in the Philippines, motorcycles are the most convenient and common form of transportation. However, motorcycles have one of the highest accident rates when it comes to vehicles.

Which is why it’s very important for parents who ride motorcycles to put their and their children’s safety first before their convenience.

It’s important to note that the law doesn’t prohibit kids from riding motorcycles with a licensed driver, but it only prohibits very young children from riding motorcycles, as in case of an accident, young children are the most at risk.

Additionally, helmets should always be worn when riding motorcycles, whether you’re an adult or a child. Helmets save lives, and while some people say that wearing helmets are inconvenient or are troublesome when they’re riding a motorcycle, it’s a very small price to pay to ensure your safety on the road.
