According to a recent study published in the British Medical Journal, men who drink at least two sweetened beverages per day had a 23% higher risk of developing heart failure.

The study was done over the course of 12 years following the dietary habits of 42,000 Swedish men.

In an interview with CNN, co-author of the study Dr. Susanna Larsson of the Stockholm Karolinska Institutet said, “The takeaway message is that people who regularly consume sweetened beverages should consider limiting their consumption to reduce their risk of heart failure.”

Of the 42,000 men who were the subjects of the study, 3,000 developed heart disease and 500 died due to heart failure.

Drinking soda and sweetened beverages daily has been also linked to an increased risk for hypertension, diabetes, and stroke.
