How to Express Milk by Hand vs. Using a Breast Pump

How to Express Milk by Hand vs. Using a Breast Pump

Hand expression or breast pump—what’s best for expressing milk? Here’s a simple guide to the advantages, disadvantages, and tips for choosing the method that works for you.

Breastfeeding provides the best nutrition for babies, but there are times when moms may need to express milk—whether to store it for later, relieve engorgement, or maintain supply. Two common methods are hand expression and using a breast pump. Each has its own benefits, and the choice depends on your comfort, lifestyle, and needs.

Hand Expression of Breast Milk

What it is:
Hand expression means using your hands to massage and compress your breast to release milk.

Advantages:

  • No equipment needed – You can do it anytime, anywhere.

  • Budget-friendly – No extra cost for pumps or accessories.

  • Gentle control – You control the pressure and rhythm.

  • Good for small amounts – Helpful when relieving fullness or collecting colostrum.

Things to consider:

  • May take practice to learn the right technique.

  • Can be tiring if expressing often or in large amounts.

Using a Breast Pump

What it is:
A breast pump is a device (manual or electric) that helps draw milk out of the breast through suction.

Advantages:

  • Efficient for larger volumes – Helpful for working moms or those who need to express regularly.

  • Hands-free options available – Some pumps allow multitasking.

  • Time-saving – Double pumps can shorten expressing sessions.

Things to consider:

  • Requires cleaning and sterilizing of parts.

  • Pumps (especially electric) can be costly.

  • May feel less natural compared to hand expression.

Which One Should You Choose?

Both methods are effective—it depends on your lifestyle and needs. Some moms use both: hand expression to relieve engorgement or collect small amounts, and a pump for regular, scheduled expressing.

✅ Tip for moms: Whichever method you choose, stay hydrated, relaxed, and consistent. Milk expression works best when you are comfortable and calm.

Hazel Paras-Cariño

Hi, I’m Hazel Paras-Cariño—Head of Content at theAsianparent Philippines, proud mom of two, and passionate storyteller at heart. With over 11 years of experience in content strategy, digital marketing, and editorial leadership, I now lead our content across web, app, and social platforms to serve one of the most important audiences out there: Filipino parents. Whether it's creating informative articles, engaging mobile experiences, or meaningful social conversations, I believe content should connect with both data and heart.

Before this role, I worked as App Marketing Manager and Web Content Editor at theAsianparent, and previously contributed to NGOs, tech, and creative industries. I hold a Master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communication, but my real education comes from balancing deadlines, diapers, and the daily chaos of motherhood. When I’m off-duty, you’ll find me painting, dancing, or exploring imaginative stories with my kids—sometimes all at once.

Let’s keep creating content that informs, empowers, and uplifts families.
