According to Cher Herrera, the woman who posted the now viral video online, a foreigner went up to her and her niece while they were having coffee, and asked if he could buy her niece’s 3-month-old daughter for $100.
“What a beautiful baby you have there”
Initially, the foreigner went up to them and said “What a beautiful baby you have there.” The pair smiled, and took the foreigner’s comment as a compliment. However, the foreigner quickly added that he wanted to buy the baby for $100.
Cher then asked the man what he meant by that, and the man said that he wanted to take care of the baby and give it a good education.
She then took it upon herself to take a video of the conversation, since she was worried that the man might do something to the baby.
“I want to buy that baby”
She then told the man, “‘It’s not a dog that you can just buy.” The man responded, “I know its not a dog. I want to buy that baby. I want to buy it.”
Cher said that she got mad at what the man said and told him, “That’s insane! Get the hell out of here!”
She added that with recent news of child trafficking and kidnapping, she felt that the man’s comments were very inappropriate.
“Hindi naman kami kawawa. Hindi naman kami mukhang pulubi pero he got the nerve to approach us. What about sa mga taong palaboy or street children dyan? Na-imagine mo yung makikita mo sa news na mga batang inaabuso kaya sabi ko I need to do something na ma-locate ang taong ito at maimbestigahan,” she quipped.
Reactions were mixed
However, when Cher posted the video online, the netizens’ reactions were mixed.
Some felt that she did the right thing by posting the video, while others felt that she was overreacting since the man might have been joking when he said that he wanted to buy the baby. In spite of this, Cher feels that parents should always remain vigilant, since human trafficking is a problem here in the Philippines.
A blotter report was filed against the foreigner, whom Cher said was “looking for a wife” when she encountered and talked to him a second time.
