when your child bumps his head

As parents, one often wonders what to do when your child bumps his head. Here are some tips that are sure to help when the occasion arises.

Given the high energy levels that kids possess, don’t be too startled or worried when your child bumps his head. Head bumps are common especially when children are learning to steady themselves or when they are already excitedly zooming around. As parents, one often wonders what to do when your child bumps his head. Some parents are sent into a panic, others are calm and put ice. Whether you fall under the former or the latter, here are some tips that are sure to help when the occasion arises:

When Your Child Bumps his Head Tip 1: Determine the severity of the bump

Most head injuries in children are mild and cause minimal superficial injury only. Parents can decide for themselves if they need to seek medical attention or not. Circumstances contributing to the accident and how the child reacts after should be considered when assessing the severity. If the child immediately jumps up and runs to you, it’s probably a mild bump. However, if your child is slow and sluggish, he might have a concussion and you should seek medical treatment immediately!

When Your Child Bumps his Head Tip 2: Keep checking your child

Although it is suggested to keep your child awake after a head injury, most children feel sleepy after an especially exciting event. Most would advise that you not let the child to child go to sleep a hour after the incident, however keep them relaxed, check on them every couple of hours for any warning signs. Nausea and vomiting, bad headache, sensitivity to light, sleepiness, inability to concentrate, feeling dazed, or other changes that are not common to your child’s usual disposition are all signs for concern. Go to the ER or the doctor if one or more of these symptoms appear.

When Your Child Bumps his Head Tip 3

Be calm when dealing with your child’s head bumps, use the injury as a learning experience so that you can prevent similar accidents in the future. Stay calm while dealing with head bumps and remember that falls can happen to all children despite the best of care. Place ice on the bump and take the opportunity to speak with your child about being careful in all that they do and perhaps with the environment that they’re in. It is a learning experience for you both.
