Friends are important in a married person’s life, as even if you’re already married, your life shouldn’t always revolve around your spouse.
But on the other hand, treating your spouse as ‘second best’ after your friends can lead to a lot of problems in your marriage, which can bring you and your spouse further apart.
What can you do?
It’s hard to choose between your friends, or your spouse. Since for the most part, lovers come and go, but your friends can last forever. But in this case, we’re talking about already being in a committed and long-term relationship, not just a simple lover, which makes things even more complicated.
Which is why it’s important for you to establish boundaries early on, and learn to value not who matters more, but what matters more in your life.
That’s why if you’re married, it’s important to maintain a close and loving relationship with your husband, because you’re connection to each other is much stronger than your friends.
Being friends with your spouse is vital if you want to keep your relationship strong. And here are some steps that can help you out:
- Be considerate about their feelings, and understand their needs. Sometimes, your spouse might want you to stay at home, instead of going out with your friends not because he wants to control you, but because he wants to spend some time with you.
- Make time for them. Sometimes, it’s understandable to not spend some time with your spouse, especially if you’re busy or need some time alone. However, your spouse also needs to be with you. Try and work on your relationship, and make an effort to be closer to them.
- If you’re fighting, learn to control your temper. It’s okay to argue with your spouse, but it’s not okay to hold grudges and/or antagonize your spouse, just because you had a disagreement.
- Remember why you got married in the first place. Look back to what made you fall in love with your spouse, and make it a point to always take that into consideration in all of your decisions. It’s a relationship, so it should never be one-sided.
