Because the method was successful in his own child, Toru Kumon believed other children can benefit as well. He continued creating the learning materials daily and this started the Kumon philosophy. It is recognized globally with Kumon Centers now available in 48 countries. Over time, aside from the Math Program, the Kumon Center also developed another one focused on Reading.

What’s different about Kumon is that it is an individualized learning method that allows children to progress at his or her own pace. The method does not compare children with each other and seeks to develop each child’s skills and help maximize their potential.

Center Flow and Its Benefits

To enroll your child in Kumon, you must go to one of their centers first and have him take a diagnostic test. This test will help determine just the right level from which your child will start his Kumon education. Your child will have to go to the center a few times a week. There, he will be given worksheets individually-designed for him.

The worksheets are designed to help the child advance smoothly while learning at an appropriate level for him. Kumon encourages self-learning, which means the child must complete the worksheets on his own. All worksheets consist of examples and explanations to help the child. However, the instructor is always around to provide support when needed. Also, just like regular school, homework is given daily to the child.

This method is said to help develop daily study habits and make the child more independent. More importantly, it helps build self-confidence in your child, enabling him to experience joy and satisfaction as he advances to each level.

Upon enrollment, the center will charge a one-time enrollment fee of Php 500.00 inclusive of 12% VAT. There is also a Monthly Tuition Fee in Kumon Philippines. It will depend on the grade level of the child and whether he is enrolled in both the Math and Reading Programs.

In Kumon, there is no age limitation. However, whether this will benefit your preschooler will depend on whether the center will accept him. It also depends on whether you believe this is the best fit for your child. This type of structured learning may not appeal to some parents of young children.
