Man convicted for killing wife and posting dead body on Facebook

Derek Medina killed his wife Jennifer Alonso and used her own phone to post the a photo of her body on Facebook.

In August 2013, 27-year-old Florida resident Derek Medina shot his wife, Jennifer Alonso and posted the photo of her dead body on Facebook, said reports.

He added the caption, “Rip Jennifer Alonso,” to the photo. The post circulated for five hours online before Facebook took it down.

He followed up the post with a note saying, “I’m going to prison or will get the death sentence for killing my wife. Love you guys. Miss you guys. Take care Facebook people you will see me in the news. My wife was punching me and I am not going to stand anymore with the abuse so I did what I did I hope you understand me.” (edited)

Their 10-year-old daughter was inside the house when Medina shot her mother.

Two years after the crime, he has been found guilty of murder after declining to testify to defend himself. He was also found guilty of firing a weapon with a child in the same house with neglect.

Prosecutors said that Medina didn’t want Alonso to leave him, and allegedly vowed to kill her if she tried.

CCTV footage and forensic evidence reconstruct the crime as follows:

The couple began to fight in their bedroom on the second floor of the house. Medina wanted to watch a movie and asked his wife to join him because she had promised to do so.

Alonso, who probably didn’t want to watch a movie, began to throw objects like makeup and towels at Medina. He, in turn, threatened her with a gun.

Alfonso then sent text messages to a friend saying that she “felt like ripping his face off,” and that she wanted more attention from him.

The argument was not over at that point, and continued in the kitchen on the first floor. According to Medina, this was where Alonso threatened him with a large kitchen knife. He said he was able to disarm her, then he went upstairs to get the gun.

Medina said he had shot her while she was pounding him with her fists. His reason was that, “She was trying to take me out.”

Watch the evidence video released by the Miami Dade Courts below:

Forensic evidence noted that Alonso suffered eight gunshot wounds fired in a downward position, indicating that she was on her knees when he shot her.

Prosecutors failed to establish Medina as a drug user, abuser and Satan worshipper. They were also unable to show that he planned the killing, which means he may only get up to 25 years instead of life in prison.
