Merry, Not Magastos: Your Guide to a More Sulit -Ber Season

Merry, Not Magastos: Your Guide to a More Sulit -Ber Season

Skyro shares practical budgeting tips as holiday spending begins to pick up across the -Ber months.

In the Philippines, Christmas rarely waits for December. Once September arrives, Christmas songs return, gift lists begin to take shape, 9.9 sales start filling online carts, and plans for reunions, parties, and Noche Buena slowly make their way onto the family calendar.

The spending tends to follow.

Data from consumer finance platform Skyro shows that financed purchases increased by 49% in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared with previous periods, as Filipinos geared up for the holidays. The biggest jump came in December, when financed purchases rose 46% from November alone.

For consumers, the numbers are also a reminder that Christmas expenses do not arrive all at once in December. They can start building up months earlier, from sale-season purchases and gifts to travel, parties, food, and year-end home expenses.

The good news is that starting early gives families more time to prepare.

Your Guide to a More Sulit -Ber Season

Here are five ways to make the most of the -ber months without letting holiday spending take over your budget:

1. Make a List, Check It Twice, Keep Your Budget Nice

Santa has his list. Your Christmas list needs a budget.

Start by writing down the expenses you already know are coming: gifts, reunions, Noche Buena, travel, school or office parties, decorations, and even the smaller expenses that are easy to overlook.

Then assign a realistic amount to each one.

Instead of waiting until December to figure out how to pay for everything, divide your expected holiday budget across your remaining paydays. Setting aside a little at a time can make a big December expense much easier to handle.

And remember: not everyone on your Christmas list needs something expensive. A thoughtful gift, homemade treat, or simply making time for someone can be just as meaningful.

2. Treat 9.9, 10.10, and 11.11 as opportunities, not invitations

The -ber months bring some of the biggest sale events of the year, but a discount only saves you money if you were already planning to buy the item.

Before checking out, ask yourself three things: Was this already on my list? Is this really the best price? Can I comfortably pay for it?

For purchases you have already planned, buying during a legitimate sale can help stretch your holiday budget further. But buying something simply because it is “50% off” still means spending 50% you may not have planned to spend.

The rule is simple: let your list lead the sale, not the other way around.

3. Match how you pay with how quickly you can repay

Not every holiday purchase has to be paid for the same way.

For smaller planned purchases that you expect to repay quickly, SkyroCredit gives eligible customers a reusable credit line with cashback that can be used by scanning QR Ph wherever accepted, including for everyday and holiday purchases. Customers can get up to 45 days at 0% interest when they pay their interest-free amount by their due date.

For a larger planned purchase such as an appliance, gadget, or furniture that a household may have been saving for, a Skyro Product Loan can spread payments over a longer period. Eligible customers may qualify for offers starting at 0% interest and ₱0 down, depending on the loan and promotion.

Whichever payment option you use, look beyond the monthly amount. Check the total amount you will repay, the due dates, applicable fees and interest, and whether the payments comfortably fit into your regular budget.

Holiday convenience should not become a January problem.

4. Give your 13th month pay a job before it arrives

It is easy to mentally spend your year-end money before receiving it.

Instead, decide ahead of time what you want it to accomplish. You might divide it between Christmas expenses, savings, existing obligations, and something you have been planning to buy.

Even setting aside part of it for January can make a difference. Bills, groceries, school expenses, and everyday needs do not disappear when the Christmas decorations come down.

Think of it this way: your holiday budget should include life after the holidays, too.

5. Make space — and maybe make a little extra

The months leading up to Christmas are also a good time for a year-end declutter.

Go through clothes, gadgets, appliances, toys, and other items that are still in good condition but no longer being used. Some can be sold through online marketplaces or garage sales, giving them a second life while adding a little extra to your holiday fund.

Items that are not worth selling can be donated instead, clearing space at home while sharing something useful with someone else.

It is a simple reminder that making Christmas meaningful does not always require buying something new.

Start Early, So You Can Enjoy December

The Philippines may have one of the world’s longest Christmas seasons, but that does not mean the spending has to feel endless.

A little planning in September can mean fewer rushed purchases in December, more room to take advantage of genuine deals, and less pressure on your finances once the celebrations are over.

Because the goal is not to spend less just for the sake of spending less. It is to spend on the things and people that matter without losing sight of what comes after Christmas.
