Most popular baby names Of 2020 revealed

Baby Centre has revealed the top baby names for 2020 along with trending name ideas and those heading for extinction.

If you’re expecting a baby, you might want to keep an eye on baby name trends to help guide your decision. Whether you’re after something unique or love the more traditional monikers, this list should help spark your inspiration.

UK parenting site, Baby Centre, has crunched the data from 2020 and compiled their list of top baby names and identified some rather interesting trends for this year.

Buh-BYE, Karen And Helloooo Sophia!

Yet another thing the year 2020 has ruined for everyone is the name Karen. The popular ‘Karen’ meme that first did the rounds on Reddit in 2014, enjoyed a surge in popularity this year as the symbol of a rude, entitled woman, causing the name to err on the edge of extinction.

On the topic of name demise, Olivia has finally been pushed off the perch by Sophia, taking out the number one spot for this year. This was no mean feat given Olivia has been number one in the UK since 2014. It has also appeared in the top three in most Australian states for the last few years.

Lockdown Inspiration

This year, there were several appearances in the charts that appear to have been inspired by various lockdown activities.

Thanks to Tiger King, Tiger increased in popularity as a baby name while Joe and Carole dropped.

Schitt’s Creek was said to inspire more parents to name their children David or Alexis, while the surname of the family (Rose) also appeared at 84.

The game Animal Crossing was said to be responsible for four of the top 10 girls’ names: Olivia, Amelia, Ava and Freya, while Alice also climbed to number 16 and Mabel broke into the top 100.

The hashtag “#nameinspo” was also a popular way for parents to share some of their favourite baby names, which led to a boost for the name, Ronnie, into the number 78 spot, which Mrs Hinch named her baby. Other popular names were Millie, Arthur, Theodore, Spencer, Hattie, Otis, Marley and Esme.
