According to the MMDA, 446 persons were killed in road accidents back in 2016. A total of 173 crashes happened in the morning, while 253 happened at night.
Motorcycle accidents topped the list with the most number of accidents
A total of 68,499 road accidents happened during the daytime, and 40,823 happened at nighttime.
Motorcycles were at the top of the list of fatal accidents, with 218 reported fatal accidents. Trucks had 103 accidents, and cars had 98.
For non-fatal accidents, motorcycles still topped the list with 11,456 accidents, cars with 7,544, and jeepneys with 1,922 accidents.
Major roads where accidents happen most
The MMDA also listed 50 major roads where accidents happen most. Here are just a few of the roads that the MMDA has mentioned:
In northern part of Metro Manila, these include Quirino Highway and Rizal Avenue in Caloocan City; Circumferential Road 4 (C4), Gov. Pascual Avenue, M. H. Del Pilar Street, and McArthur Highway in Malabon City; Honorio Lopez Boulevard, Radial Road 10 (R10), and Naval Street in Navotas, and Maysan Road and MacArthur Highway in Valenzuela.
In the southern sector, accident prone areas were Sergio Osmeña Highway and Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue and EDSA in Makati City; Alabang-Zapote Road, Real Street and Marcos Alvarez Avenue in Las Piñas City.
In the eastern part of Metro Manila, the high-incidence areas were identified as the Marcos and Sumulong Highways in Marikina City; EDSA and Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City; Ortigas Avenue, E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue, Marcos Highway and Julia Vargas Street in Pasig City; and Ortigas Avenue, EDSA, Santolan Road, P. Guevarra Street and N. Domingo Street in San Juan City.
In Manila, road accidents mostly occurred along President Sergio Osmeña Highway, Radial Road 10 and Roxas Boulevard. In Quezon City, Commonwealth Avenue, EDSA, Quirino Highway, Quezon Avenue and Katipunan Avenue.
Road safety tips
- When you’re driving, make sure to put away your cellphone so that you can avoid distractions.
- Whenever you or your children are riding motorcycles, make sure to wear helmets, and be mindful of other vehicles.
- Make sure to look both ways before crossing the road.
- You should never drink and drive. It’s better to get a cab ride home than to risk being involved in an accident.
- Teach your children the rules of the road, and to understand and follow road signs.
- Only cross the road on designated pedestrian crossings or using the overpass.
- When biking, make sure to give way to other vehicles, and make yourself visible when biking at night.
- Car seats should always be used if you have children in the car.
- Make it a point to immediately buckle up once you’re inside any vehicle.
