It never hurts to be more careful, and in many instances our efforts to keep our family pay off. Take this Quezon City mother as an example. Worried that her child’s nanny is up to something, she installed hidden cameras in her house to keep track of the goings on in her household on a daily basis.

On Wednesday, when she reviewed the day’s events, she was shocked at what she saw.

The nanny, later identified as Rowena Arabit, was trying to feed her one-year-old ward, but when the child refused to eat, Rowena hit him on the head. She struck him so hard that it could be heard on the footage.

Livid, the mother immediately took Rowena to the precinct and handed her over to the police.

When asked why she did such a thing, Rowena claimed that she was just having difficulties dealing with a personal matter, that she wasn’t in the right headspace, and that she it wasn’t like her to hit a child on the head.

The most painful part of the whole ordeal, the mother said, was that they treated Rowena like their own blood.

Finding the right nanny

Hiring nannies has become a way of living for most families. As it happens, nannies bring so much help in running the household that some families consider them a crucial part of the family network. Sometimes, it is even necessary to look for an extra hand in helping us manage our daily lives.

This fact unfortunately lures unqualified persons to apply for the job—sometimes to dangerous consequences. What are the things we should consider when we think about getting a nanny?

  • Seek referrals
  • know what/who you are looking for
  • solicit resumes from candidates
  • interview all nanny candidates you consider hiring
  • check references
  • run background checks.
