Being a parent means devoting your time, effort, and emotions and raising your kid the best way you can. But even the most resilient moms and dads are not immune to exhaustion. So how do you regroup and recharge whenever you feel overwhelmed by all the responsibilities of parenthood? Here are 7 ways.

1. Manage your own expectations

Do not be too hard on yourself. Make sure to focus and prioritize each task, in order to take it one thing at a time. Let’s say you need to clean the house, breastfeed, go to work, and come home to cook for the family. Don’t expect your day to go flawlessly. Prepare for obstacles. Be creative and resilient, without beating yourself up when things don’t go as planned.

2. Allow yourself some me-time

Seeking time for yourself isn’t selfish. In fact, actively making me-time a priority can make you a better parent. Get a massage, manicure, pedicure, go shopping, or simply take a nice, long nap. Whatever it is you need to do to feel rejuvenated, go do it. Most importantly, don’t feel guilty about it!

3. Be kind to yourself

Self-care is key, physically, emotionally, and mentally. This goes beyond me-time. It’s constantly making it a habit not to be too hard on yourself. You’re doing your best. Sure, there’s always room for improvement, but give yourself some credit, you’ve come this far! Loving yourself helps you love your kids better!

4. Reach out to mom and dad friends

It takes a village to raise a child, and it often takes one to help you be a better parent. Seek help, reassurance, and comfort in parents who are in the same boat. Have coffee or dinner, catch up and vent, there’s nothing like a day with trusted friends to revive your strength.

5. Know when to say no

Saying yes to your own wellness may mean giving up commitments that only bring more pressure. If you need to sit out a family reunion, for instance, do so. Do not feel pressured to make everyone happy if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Put off tasks that aren’t as pressing, like doing loads of laundry or cleaning the kitchen. Know what you can let go of, regroup, and start fresh the next day.
