Typhoon Nona is intensifying as it approaches the Philippines, with many areas already under Signal #1, including Metro Manila.
Inquirer shared the following tips from Plan International:
1. Make a family communications plan.
Make sure phones have enough battery and load, just in case. Agree on a meeting place if you get separated.
2. Stay informed, follow the news.
Know the level of nearby rivers and other pertinent information about the course of the typhoon.
3. Follow instructions from government officials.
If classes are suspended, it would be wise to keep the kids at home. When evacuations are necessary, it is best to go: better safe than sorry.
4. Stay in a safe place; be aware.
Beware of trees that could fall or electric wires that get damaged.
5. Have emergency supplies ready.
Prepare a first aid kit and enough food and water for you and your household members in case roads become impassable. Blankets to keep warm is also a good idea.
6. Have sturdy shoes ready to use.
Flood waters will make it difficult to see any hazards on the ground. Leptospirosis is also a threat to prepare for.
7. Secure property.
This includes making sure cars and pets are safe from rising floodwaters.
