Both husband and wife need to work together and what they choose to do can make or break the relationship. Marriage is a lifelong commitment and while any couple would want their relationship to work, it does take effort on both sides.
While some couples may find themselves blissfully married until the end of their days, others are not so lucky.
8 tips to a healthier relationship
My husband and I have been married for 13 years and while not everything is perfect all the time, our love, support, and respect for each other is there.
Here are 8 things I found helpful that has helped keep our marriage strong for more than a decade:
1) Learn to compromise
My husband and I and different people and we get that. It’s not about being right or being perfect all the time. At the end of the day, you have to learn and accept that something’s got to give and you have to be willing to adjust in some situations.

2) Talk with each other
Communication is key to any relationship, not just married couples!
If there’s something bothering you, don’t be afraid to let your partner know. If something good happened today, share it with him/her too. Even small talk while cooking or doing the dishes can go a long way in building a healthy relationship.
3) Have some ‘me’ time
Just because you’re married now doesn’t mean you have to spend all your time together. Having some alone time to do the things you enjoy doing for yourself can help you de-stress and still help you grow as an individual.

4) Spend time together
It’s a struggle to spend time with just the two of us especially with kids but spending quality time together helps keep us close to each other. It doesn’t have to mean going out on a date either. It can be as simple as curling up in bed and watching a movie together.
5) Learn to say sorry
One of the things our ninang and ninong told us before we got married is to never go to bed without apologizing to each other when we fight. Arguments is inevitable in a relationship and can be healthy and cathartic but at the end of the day, we still need to acknowledge if we made a mistake and to own up to it too.
6) Be honest
Honesty is the best policy in all aspects of our life. We are all human and prone to mistakes and error, but we always need to tell the truth, especially if our actions or words can affect our partner too.

7) Expectations vs Reality
We’ve all been there. We have this painted version of what married life looks like when we were younger and sometimes, our marriage does not seem to live up to our fairytale version. In times like this, it’s always important to manage our expectations and accept that it will never be perfect but it’s real.
8) Don’t compare
Sometimes we can’t help comparing our partners to others but as much as possible, don’t.
He or she may not be as sweet or as good as a cook or as thoughtful as someone else’s partner but we married our partner in spite of and despite of. Focus on their good qualities instead!
As they say, it takes two to tango. Try these tips and build a healthier relationship as a couple.
