As Baby Seve nears his 1st birthday, Toni Gonzaga is noticing how she and husband director Paul Soriano differ when it comes to their views on parenting.

In a recent interview with PEP, the 33-year-old TV host/actress admits she’s more of a disciplinarian, while Paul is the more fun and playful parent: “He’s more on the play, fun.”

“I’m very rough with him,” interjected Paul, “and she’s like, ‘No, he might get hurt.’ We’re just boys being boys.”

The first-time mom then clarified that she has anxiety when she leaves baby Seve with Paul.

“Nakakatakot nga kapag iniiwan ko sila sa bahay, kung anu-anong mga picture nakikita ko,” she shared. “Nasa labas (si baby Seve), nakaupo sa gutter. Sabi ko, ‘Bakit nasa gutter? Bakit andun ang bata?’ Kung saan-saan niya dinadala.”

Even though they may have different parenting styles, they agree on one thing: making sure Seve doesn’t grow up spoiled.

“It’s a challenge to not give your son what he wants when you know you can give what he wants,” Toni confided. “It’s a discipline not just for our son, but also for us parents.”

Though Seve’s lolo and lola, Toni’s parents, shower him with toys and gifts, Toni doesn’t want this to be the norm.

“Ayoko siyang masanay na every time umaalis, merong nabibili,” confessed Toni. “Kasi nung bata naman kami, tuwing magmo-mall kami, di naman namin nabibili lahat. Gusto ko, in a way, ma-experience niya iyong ganoon. Hindi lahat ng bagay sa mundo makukuha mo because in real life, hindi naman talaga ganoon.”

Though they may disagree at times, Toni is happy that parenthood has taught her to love her husband more.

“I never truly and fully understood how much I love Paul until I saw him loved our baby,” gushed Toni. “Doon ko parang na-realize na si Seve ang nagsemento ng pagmamahal ko kay Paul. Nakita ko kung paano niya minahal si Seve, minamahal si Seve, inaalagaan so mas nag-grow iyong admiration, respect, and love for him as a partner.”

For his part, Paul also shared how amazed he is by how motherhood has truly shown Toni’s strength.

“I see Toni in a different light now,” he told the Inquirer in a previous interview. “She has always been a determined and passionate woman. But I saw how physically, emotionally and mentally strong she was.”
