Numerous flash floods and landslides throughout Mindanao have left over 200 people dead, wiped out numerous homes, and even destroyed an entire mountain village.

According to PNP in Northern Mindanao, at least 135 people have died because of the storm.

Additionally, up to 50 people have been reported dead in the Zamboanga Peninsula, and 18 in Lanao del Sur.

More than 100 people have also been reported missing, mosty in Lanao del Norte and Zamboanga del Norte.

The NDRRMC will also be investigating reports that the high death toll was a result of a failure to implement preventive evacuation in areas hit by the typhoon.

Important tips for parents during and after a typhoon

As parents, it’s important to know what you can do in order to keep your family safe. While most typhoons don’t always pose a threat to your family’s life, it’s nevertheless important to keep these safety tips in mind during and after a typhoon:

  1. Remain calm, and do not panic.
  2. Pack food that doesn’t require cooking such as canned goods or biscuits and crackers.
  3. Keep flashlights and battery-powered radios within reach, along with extra batteries.
  4. Make sure your house is stable.
  5. If you have any pets, make sure that they’re in a safe place.
  6. Keep away from any low-lying beaches or any locations that can be swept away by a storm surge.
  7. If you need to evacuate, make sure to lock all of your doors. Do not panic while going to the evacuation center.
  8. After the typhoon, make sure to check for any live wires in your vicinity. Take note of any repairs that need to be done.
