Man scheduled for gallbladder surgery receives unexpected vasectomy

Man scheduled for gallbladder surgery receives unexpected vasectomy

A man in Argentina found himself undergoing an unexpected vasectomy instead of the intended gallbladder surgery.

In an unprecedented turn of events, a man in Argentina found himself undergoing an unexpected vasectomy instead of the intended gallbladder surgery. This shocking incident took place at the Florencio Diaz Provincial Hospital in Cordoba, prompting a legal case filed by the 41-year-old patient, Jorge Base.

Instead of gall bladder surgery, man receives unexpected vasectomy

Mr. Base arrived at the hospital on Wednesday prepared for what he believed would be a routine gallbladder operation. However, upon regaining consciousness post-surgery, he was bewildered to learn from his doctor that he had undergone a vasectomy instead of the intended procedure.

“I’m angry and helpless because what’s done is done, there’s no turning back. So many questions running through my mind. I don’t understand how they can reach such negligence, such a grave mistake,” said Mr. Base, as quoted in an article by La Nacion.

Investigations revealed that the day Mr. Base scheduled his surgery happened to be the designated day for vasectomies at the hospital. This led the hospital staff and doctors to mistakenly assume that Mr. Base was there for the male sterilization procedure.

Despite the mix-up, doctors promptly performed the gallbladder surgery on Mr. Base. However, the implications of the unexpected vasectomy were not lost on him. While doctors assured him that a vasectomy reversal was possible, the chances of successful conception thereafter were minimal.

Regarding the medical mistake, Jorge Base asserts that it is explicitly mentioned that it was a bladder surgery.

“Just read it, it’s not very scientific. I don’t want to point fingers, but no one has claimed responsibility. They also said: ‘Well, don’t make it a drama, because you can still have a daughter by artificial insemination’”

Presently, Mr. Base has two children from his previous marriage and is now remarried, with plans of expanding his family once again. However, the unintended vasectomy has cast uncertainty over his aspirations for fatherhood.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of clear communication and meticulous verification procedures in medical settings to prevent such unfortunate mishaps from occurring in the future.
