Last year we covered some of the baby names that were going extinct in Australia, and they were not hugely surprising, Beryl, Bruce, basically the names that make you think of people over the age of 60. But new data from the UK suggests that it isn’t just the daggy old names that are going out of style (sorry Beryl, you’re not daggy, you’re cool). New research revealed by Flowercard looking into the looked at the latest data from the Office of National Statistics in the UK and showed the names that have had the biggest drops in popularity.
Baby names come and go in cycles of popularity until they become extinct… just like Kirsty, Jordan and Shauna, who will soon be all but a memory and become unpopular baby names.
Bye-bye Shauna?
The data showed that girl’s names like Kirsty, Jordan and Shauna are now on the endangered names list because they experienced the biggest drops in popularity between 2000 and 2019.
When it comes to boys, Mitchell, Kieran and Ross were the biggest losers (in popularity, you guys aren’t losers, don’t worry).

Baby name trends in Australia
While we might now be seeing many baby Bruces being born in Australia, we are still seeing plenty of Olivers, Olivias and Charlottes. We are also seeing a rise in gender-neutral monikers like Charlie and Riley and we are trending towards shorter names like Ava and Isla for girls and Leo for boys. If you’re looking for a unique name that have been making a bit of a comeback recently, Luna is creeping up the popularity list and so have more old fashioned names like Pearl and Aurora.
