For many working women, walking home alone at night is a necessary risk. That’s why it’s very important to know what you can do to keep yourself safe and reduce the risk of something bad happening to you. Here are some helpful tips:

  1. Whenever possible, try to avoid walking home alone at night. Being with someone greatly reduces the risk that criminals will see you as a potential target. So if you have a friend or an officemate who lives near your place, it’s best to go home with that person.
  2. Carry a flashlight, pepper spray, or a whistle with you for protection. You can use the flashlight to blind an attacker, and you can also use it to club someone who attempts to hurt you. A whistle is equally helpful since you can use it to alert attention to yourself. Pepper spray is also good to have in your purse, just make sure that you know how to use it.
  3. Avoid using your phone or any other device while you’re walking. If any criminals see your phone, it immediately lets them know that you are a potential target. Be unassuming and just go on your way until you can get safely home.
  4. Be confident and alert. Walk confidently, with your head up, and act unafraid. Being confident and alert deters any would-be attacker since they would feel that it’s easier to look for another target instead of you.
  5. Trust your instincts. If you feel that a certain area feels bad or unsafe, use your better judgment and avoid walking along that path. Your instincts can really protect you, so you should always trust your gut when it comes to keeping yourself safe.
