2 women arrested for separate incidents of attempted kidnapping

10 Feb, 2017

2 women were arrested for allegedly attempting to kidnap young children in 2 separate incidents in Parañaque and Mandaluyong City.

They thought the suspect might have a mental disorder

A 52-year-old woman from Parañaque named Marlyn Smith allegedly tried abducting a 7-year-old child inside the Redemptorist Church in Parañaque.

According to the child's mother, Shane Osorio, the suspect went up to them, and suddenly grabbed the 7-year-old. Thankfully, the child fought against the kidnapper and quickly alerted the guards.

When the woman was taken to the precinct, her mood suddenly changed, and authorities felt that she might have a mental disorder due to her changing statements as well as her demeanor.

However, the suspect underwent a psychological evaluation and it was found that she was mentally stable. Charges of child abuse and attempted kidnapping will be filed against her.

She was beat up by a mob

In a separate incident that happened in Mandaluyong, 30-year-old Filomena Pattung was beat up by a mob after she attempted to kidnap 3 children from the gate of a public school.

According to one uncle, the suspect suddenly grabbed the children and was saying that she was the child's mother. Like the other suspect, Pattung pretended to have a mental disorder when she was arrested. She also had other bruises and wounds because she said that she was hurting herself. She maintains that she wasn't trying to kidnap the children.

However, according to the Women and Children's Protection Desk in Mandaluyong, the suspect wasn't crazy. Like the other suspect, she will be charged with attempted kidnapping and child abuse.

Police believe that they're a part of a syndicate

According to the police, they believe that the women are part of a syndicate that kidnaps and is involved in trafficking children. They add that the suspects' excuse that they are crazy are commonly used by these syndicates to avoid being arrested.

They warn parents to always keep their children safe, and to teach their children to keep away from any strangers, and to immediately look for an adult that could help them out should someone attempt to kidnap them.
