According to a statement from Mayor Oscar Moreno, a 14-year-old has been killed after he was crushed by a falling wall in their home in Barangay Agusan.
The worst was over when it happened
Reports say that the walls of the teen’s home was weakened, and then collapsed because of the strong rains that buffeted Cagayan de Oro on Tuesday. The sad part was that the worst was over when the unfortunate incident happened.
Their village is located near a river that was prone to flooding.
Earlier Tuesday, CDO suffered waist-high floods as well as flashfloods because of the strong rains.
Hundreds of families have already been evacuated, and several barangays were placed under a red alert warning and underwent forced evacuation to keep them safe.
CDO was placed under a state of calamity
CDO also declared a state of calamity early on Tuesday morning due to the extent of the massive flooding that affected the entire region.
The state of calamity allows access for the local government to use calamity funds that will be used for relief operations and other similar forms of assistance.
Classes in preschool, elementary, and high school have been suspended, and families from barangays Tumpagon, Pigsag-an, Lumbia, Tuburan, Pagalungan, Sansimon, Iponan, Blua, Pagatpat and Canitoan were forced to evacuate because of the strong rain.
Several schools are also serving as a temporary shelter for the displaced residents.
Thankfully, the floods are starting to subside, and some of the families who are staying in evacuation centers have slowly started to return home.
