8 Musicals and plays we can't wait to see in 2017

Wicked

Due to insistent public demand, the Tony award-winning musical Wicked will be coming back to Manila starting February 2, 2017. It will be staged at The Theatre at Solaire, Solaire Resort and Casino, Aseana Avenue, Parañaque. The heartwarming tale of an unlikely friendship and an unforgettable adventure of self-discovery and empowerment has won the hearts of many theater lovers and critics, who have hailed it as one of the best musicals of our time.

Swan Lake

Ballet Philippines is bringing back a beloved classic to conclude their 47th season. To be staged at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Main Theater, with Philippines’ premier danseur Nonoy Froilan taking the lead, this restaging of Swan Lake will stay true to the story of love and forgiveness which defies all obstacles. The show will run from February 24 to March 5, 2017.

Matilda

Based on Roald Dahl’s beloved 1988 children’s book and its 1996 movie adaptation, this much anticipated musical (which was a Broadway hit) will be staged in Manila by Atlantis Theatrical. No dates, or details about the location have been released as of now and cast auditions are currently ongoing.

Noli Me Tangere the Opera

The Cultural Center of the Philippines will bring to life one of the most memorable works of national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal with this world-class production, to be staged on January 28 (8pm), Jan. 29 (2pm), February 1 (8pm), Feb.2 (8pm), Feb. 3 (2pm/8pm) at the CCP Main Theater.

Mula sa Buwan

Set in 1940’s Manila, this new play based on Cyrano de Bergerac is described by its creators as “a tale of love and defiance” which “shows the innocence and beauty of our nation where music, harana, kundiman, wit, passion, and hope abound.”

There is no minimum age required to watch the play, but parental guidance is required for kids under the age of 13.

Don Quixote

As part of their latest season, Ballet Manila will be bringing to life the enduring classic, written by Miguel de Cervantes, promising viewers of all ages a vibrant performance and an unforgettable adventure!

Paw Patrol Live! Race to the Rescue

The Paw Patrol will be delighting their young fans with their first ever live tour in Manila on June 2 to 4, 2017!

Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), as part of their 50th anniversary season, will be staging Bunk Puppets’ Sticks, Stones and Broken Bones from May 3 to 7, 2017. This surreal shadow puppet show will truly amaze viewers of all ages, though creators caution that some parts of the show may be quite scary for kids under the age of 7.
