Pokwang and O’Brien first met in the United States, on the set of the film Edsa Woolworth. Shortly after that, they went public with their relationship back in January 2015. Though she lost their first baby 7 months later, she remained positive, telling ABS-CBN, “May mas magandang plan si God na mas matibay.”

Planning to get pregnant over 40? Here’s how you should prepare

gives this advice: “Take prenatal and folic acid supplements to prevent neural tube defects which lead to problems like spina bifida,” Dr Kelly Loi, Fertility Specialist, Mount Elizabeth Hospital Singapore tells theAsianparent.

“Schedule a preconception appointment to assess overall gynaecological health and fertility status. Seeing a fertility specialist would be useful to determine if fertility treatment is needed and optimise chances of pregnancy. Once pregnant, regular prenatal visits are important to monitor for the well-being of both mother and baby. A variety of prenatal tests are now available to screen for conditions such as Down syndrome.

Staying fit and healthy is of utmost important for moms after the age of 40. Here are some quick tips.

Schedule a checkup as early as possible: It would help to make sure the doctor you choose to consult is a fertility specialist or one who specializes in mature pregnancies. This will ease whatever anxiety you may be feeling and help make the journey easier.

Stick to a healthy diet and exercise: Eating healthy and staying active is a must during pregnancy at any age. Make sure you are at the right weight for your height. If not, shed some pounds to avoid pregnancy complications, such as high blood pressure, clotting problems, or gestational diabetes, once you get pregnant.

Address existing health problems: If you have chronic conditions like diabetes, or high blood pressure, make sure you will be able to manage them once you get pregnant.

Break up with vices: Go cold turkey, there is no other alternative. Stop smoking or drinking alcohol months before you plan to start trying to conceive. It would make it easier if your partner or husband quits vices, too.

Divulge all plans, feelings, and fears: Be upfront about the nature of your job. Is it stressful? Does it require you to travel? Are you emotionally prepared to start the journey. Don’t leave anything out, so your doctor can know how to best help you and your baby.

Listen to your doctor’s instruction: After your checkup, be sure to stick to your doctor’s advice. If you’ve been prescribed medication, be sure not to skip doses. If you have been instructed to change a certain thing about your routine, don’t hesitate. Just focus on what will benefit you and your baby and know that the sacrifice will surely be worth it.
