It was in May 2016 when Denise Laurel and Sol Mercado postponed their wedding until 2017, citing the need for more time to prepare as the reason behind it. Now, it seems the wedding, which has been three years in the making, is no longer pushing through.
A day after Sol’s team, Barangay Ginebra, won the PBA Governor’s Cup, Denise took to Instagram to make the end of their engagement public. In a post, which has since been deleted, Denise wrote: “I just want to ask all of you for prayers right now and support. From now on Sol and I are just friends. I am very happy for him! But please don’t tag me first on anything that has to do with him. We both tried our best.”

“Please respect Sol. He did not cheat on me. He didn’t do anything wrong…”
She also used her post as a chance to apologize to Sol and to clarify that there was no third party involved.
“Please respect Sol. He did not cheat on me. He didn’t do anything wrong. We [have] both been trying for a while now. He’s amazing and brought so much into my life. God has something’s planned for us both.”
Just a week before she broke the news, Denise was spotted at a PBA game rooting for Sol’s team, proving that the two have remained friends.

“The moment I found out, the first thing that came into my mind was my family. Iyon parati ang una kong iniisip eh. I come from a very strict family, very conservative… I was just thinking how they would react although I never ever thought, not even once, that this was a mistake,” the 29-year-old mom recounted in the same interview when asked how she felt when she found out she was pregnant.
Alejandro’s father is an Italian-American, whose identity Denise has yet to disclose. She described him as a “private person” and she told PEP in a past interview that though he asked her to marry him more than once when they were still together, her main priority has always been their son.
