Written by Best Buddies Philippines, this article sheds light on what Down syndrome is, the challenges and achievements of individuals with Trisomy 21, and how we can all be part of a more inclusive and supportive community.
February is a month dedicated to the National Down Syndrome Consciousness. This time of year provides a platform of love and support, and an opportunity to educate the community about Trisomy 21.
Trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome, happens when a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. Typically, people have 46 chromosomes in each cell, but individuals with Down syndrome have 47 because they have three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two.
This extra chromosome is usually the result of a random event during cell division when the egg or sperm is forming. It is not caused by anything a parent does or does not do. While Down syndrome affects development, every person with Down syndrome is unique, with their own strengths, abilities, and personality. With the right support, they can thrive and lead fulfilling lives.
As we challenge the stigma, and promote the achievements of individuals in the community who live up to something extra, National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the lives, contributions, and talents of people with an extra chromosome.
Here are five individuals who are EXTRA in all their achievements..
