Some essential oils can cause boys to develop breasts!

Some essential oils can cause boys to develop breasts!

A recent study from the US has discovered that certain essential oils can interfere with hormones, and cause boys to develop breasts!

Essential oils have been slowly growing in popularity as of late. These oils help kids deal with respiratory problems, as well as help parents relax and calm down after a stressful day.

However, a new study found that some essential oils might interfere with hormones, and cause some problems.

What essential oils are risky?

Researchers have discovered that some of these oils contain chemicals that could cause abnormal breast growth in young boys.

The study found that eight chemicals in these plant-derived oils interfere with hormones. These chemicals boost estrogen levels and inhibit testosterone. Estrogen is the hormone responsible for female development during puberty, while testosterone is responsible for male development.

These oils can be found in shampoos, soaps, hair products, and lotions.

J. Tyler Ramsey, from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in the US shares, “Our society deems essential oils as safe. However, they possess a diverse amount of chemicals and should be used with caution because some of these chemicals are potential endocrine disruptors.”

Examples of oils that contain these chemicals are tea tree oil, and lavender oil.

What do parents need to do?

Here are some recommendations regarding the use of essential oils:

  • Proper use is important when it comes to handling these oils since they’re very concentrated.
  • These oils shouldn’t be applied directly to the skin.
  • They also shouldn’t be used on children under the age of three.
  • Pregnant women should also consult their doctors first before using any of these types of oils.
  • It’s important to use them appropriately, as they can indeed provide some health benefits.

All in all, the most important thing is to be informed about the oils that you’re using. It’s not a good idea to just buy these oils without any idea of how to use them properly, as they can be harmful if not used the right way.

Currently, research is still going on regarding the safety of essential oils. While the negative effects haven’t been completely proven, it’s still a good idea to err on the side of caution, and make wise decisions when it comes to your family’s health.
