The 7 best ways to get rid of unwanted facial hair

The 7 best ways to get rid of unwanted facial hair

Get rid of that pesky fuzz with these facial hair removal methods

It’s normal to have a little fuzz on your upper lip, but if you’re self-conscious about your little ‘stache then maybe it’s time for you explore different ways to remove your facial hair. Getting rid of facial hair can be a pain—literally and figuratively. But by choosing a hair removal method that works for you, it doesn’t have to be too difficult. Here’s a rundown of the most popular and effective methods.

1. Lasers

Lasers are highly effective at reducing hair growth, and have a long-term effect because they change the quality and texture of the hair. Hair regrowth becomes thinner and lighter over multiple sessions. The only drawback is the cost of the treatment, and possible risk for skin irritation.

2. Electrolysis

Electrolysis is also very effective, but because it requires the insertion of a needle into individual follicles, this method can be painful. This is also quite pricey and, like lasers, also require multiple sessions.

3. Plucking

As you’re working one hair at a time, tweezing is a lot of work. That’s why plucking is best for smaller areas like your brows and those few stray hairs on your chin. Make sure that you clean your tweezers after each use with warm soap and water, storing them in a dry place.

4. Waxing

This popular method uses either cold or hot wax, and could be done at home or with a professional. However, this isn’t good for everyone, as skin can be sensitive to the wax—and the skin on your face (especially the upper lip) is especially sensitive. Waxing could also lead to ingrown hairs if not properly done, so it’s best to get waxed in a reputable boutique.

5. Shaving

Shaving is probably the easiest way to remove unwanted hair, but not a lot of women use razors on their face. Plenty stay clear of shaving because of the belief that hair comes back thicker when you shave. This is an old wives’ tale. When you shave, your follicle only gets cut in half so it feels more prickly, but it doesn’t get any thicker. If you do decide to shave, don’t make several passes over the same area, as this could irritate your skin. Also, prepare your skin with a pre-shave oil and apply a moisturizer afterwords to soothe your skin.

6. Threading

Threading uses a thin, double cotton thread that pull hairs. This method works better on areas like the eyebrows, upper lip, and cheeks. Threading can be quite tricky to do on yourself, so for best results, go to a professional at a salon.

7. Depilatory creams

Creams are very easy to use. You can apply a cream to the area, then just wipe away the hair. However, like waxing, this doesn’t work for everyone because sensitive skin could have an unwanted reaction. If you want to try using a depilatory cream, test it on your forearm or the inside of your elbow and watch out for itchiness, discoloration, or burning sensations.
