What sorts of habits would really harm your vision?

What sorts of habits would really harm your vision? What sorts of habits would really harm your vision?

Dr. Clare O'Donnell from Optegra Eye Sciences gives us some advice on what really harms your vision as well as those of your children.

Sitting too close to the TV or using another person's glasses are usually things that parents warn us not to do, since they might damage our eyes. However, according to Optegra Eye Sciences, these are myths that have persisted, but don't really have any factual basis.

So, what sort of habits would really harm our vision? Dr. Clare O'Donnell from Optegra Eye Sciences gives us some advice on what really harms your vision as well as those of your children.

Being in front of a computer for extended periods of time

Fun fact: computer monitors don't really harm your eyes. However, the habit that does affect your vision would be if you stare at a computer monitor for long periods of time.

According to Dr. Clare, being in front of a computer monitor makes us blink less, and can dry out our eyes. So it's important to take frequent breaks if you work in front of a monitor for extended periods of time.

Additionally, for kids who spend a lot of time playing computer games, it would be better if you could manage their computer use. It's not only good for their vision, but it's also good for them to spend some time away from the computer.

Poor Hygiene

A lot of us are concerned about our vision, however we don't really take steps in order to keep our eyes healthy. A good example of this is when it comes to make up.

For example, when it comes to eye make up, it's important to remove it before going to sleep at night, and to avoid sharing your make up with other people. It's also important to avoid touching your eyes or scratching them especially if you haven't watched your hands.

Another example would be when it comes to wearing contact lenses. Your should never sleep without taking out their contact lenses. Sleeping with contact lenses on increases the risk of eye infection, and so does wearing contact lenses for days without taking them out.

Environmental factors

Sunlight can be harmful to your eyes. Whenever you and your kids are going to the beach or going out on a sunny day, it's important to make sure that you have sufficient eye protection.

It's important to use sunglasses or shades with UV protection so that you can be sure that your sunglasses will be protecting your eyes.

Bad habits

Did you know that the general condition of your health also affects your eye health? Negative habits such as smoking or drinking have an adverse effect on your eyes.

Alcohol has a negative impact on your vision since it increases the reaction time for your eyes to dilate, and it also affects your ability to perceive colors. Smokers on the other hand, have double the chances of having cataracts.

So if you have any of these bad habits, it would be in your best interest to try and quit, since it's good not only for your vision, but also for your health in general.
