A stunning photo series by Dutch Photographer Marry Fermont shows newborns during their first hours of life, posed as they were inside their mother's womb.

The project allows moms and dads to fully visualize in what position their little ones developed for nine months.

"You see the baby coming out, but once they're out, it's hard to imagine that they were ever inside of you," Fermont told PopSugar. "This gives you a little idea of how it fit."

Marry first had the idea in 2011 when a midwife posed a baby for her

Before snapping a photo, Marry allows the mom and dad to have skin-to-skin contact

Then, the reflexes are checked by the midwife

Then, Marry asks the midwife to show how the baby sat in the womb

Sometimes Marry allows the parents to try positioning the newborn

Then, she snaps the photo!

"A lot of midwives in the Netherlands do this in general," says Marry

Throughout pregnancy, babies twist and turn in utero

But they normally settle into one position prior to labor

These positions vary: they can be settle headfirst or in the breech position (feet first)

In some rare cases, babies are delivered buttocks first. If they settle into a sideways position, a caesarean section is usually done
