  • The day that changed how they saw each other

In the law of magnetism, opposite poles attract, negative poles repel. Little did I know that this theory is also applicable in love.

How could you possibly love a person whom you really hated, and more so, marry him? Let me tell you my story.

Both of us are probinsyanos from the North. We grew up in the same hometown, however, he’s from the barrio, and I lived in Población. Despite going to the same school in kindergarten, I never noticed him back then.

We met again in grade three when they relocated to Poblacion. We were not classmates, but schoolmates as he belonged to the lower section.

Being polar opposites

We became classmates again in grade six, but we were on opposite sides of the pole. I was the class president, while he was one of the rowdy ones. He never listened to me every time I stood before the class and tell them to keep quiet. He was just "too cool to care."

He gave me the impression that he was just an easy-go-lucky guy who would never achieve anything someday. To be fair, he doesn’t like me either.

He thought that I was a power tripper. So, we ended up hating each other during our elementary days. No greetings even during the graduation rites.

High school life was even more exciting. We both enrolled in the same school. He landed in the lower section as expected, and me in the "star section" as class valedictorian. Our paths crossed during our intramurals, as he was the captain ball of the volleyball men’s team in their section.

When he was playing, I noticed that,

"Oh, magaling pala siya mag-volleyball!"

It was only then that I learned that he’s really talented with that game. And so, our class ended up losing the game, while the crowds cheered up for his team.

We also crossed paths during the Math quiz bee, which was open for all students who had a grade high enough to qualify. I thought to myself, "Oh, magaling pala siya sa Math?" He managed to make it far in the competition, but of course, I didn't let him win.

Despite me noticing his talents, I still hated his guts. And the feeling was mutual. He even had the nerve to say that I'm maarte and hindi naman maganda to one of my classmates.

Third-year high school, I was surprised that we became classmates. But he was still the arrogant and presko guy I knew. I was determined to put him in his place.

I had to admit, though, he was really clever. In English class, our teacher asks us to submit our notebooks for checking. Mr. Mayabang's chair was close to our teacher's desk and after every English class, he would insist on carrying them for her.

I noticed that every time my notebook will be returned to me, either it was dirty or some of the pages were missing. Little did I know, he was copying my notes so he can complete his notes as well. This made me hate him even more.

The day everything changed

Then came another intramural, this time, were now classmates. Because of the mixup in the schedule, he didn't know that they had a game and he forgot his uniform at home. This was a crucial game, the last competing game prior to declaring the overall champion. Our section needed this win to be declared the overall champion.

I also played chess and volleyball, so he knew I had a uniform with me. So to my surprise, he approached me, in his usual presko tone. “Pssst, pahiram ng jersey mo, wala akong damit. My laro na kami ngayon. Bahala ka, kapag hindi mo ako pinahiram, kasalanan mo bakit matatalo tayo.”

So I ended up lending him my jersey, or else, it will be my fault. As a result, we won the game, Yahoo! In fairness, he’s really good at that sport. He once again showed his prowess to everyone. He didn't return my jersey right away because he said he was going to wash it first. I guess he never got around to it.

What he realized

We became close after that game. He realized that I wasn't as maarte as he thought and that I was easy to get along with.  We ended up being classmates until 4th year high school, and became the best of friends.

Our neighbors would tease us because he would go to my house after school. I did not mind because to me it’s nothing but friendship.

In one of our speeches in the class, I had mentioned that I wanted to marry an engineer because I wanted to become an accountant. I believe that this is the perfect match as we will have different perspectives in life. Actually, ayoko ng marunong kami pareho sa pera.

I did not know that he took it seriously. He was supposed to take up accountancy, but when he heard about what I said, he took the entrance exam secretly at Mapua Institute of Technology.

To my surprise, he was my only classmate who passed the entrance exam. Again, I didn’t have any inkling that he really liked me. Graduation came, and we said our goodbyes to each other.

Kilig story - I fell in love with the guy I hated the most

I went to Baguio for college, while he took his studies in Mapua. We lost communication because we were both busy with our own lives. Then came February.  I was surprised that he took the initiative to visit me in Baguio. We were both sophomores at that time.

With such conviction, he said that he liked me way back in third-year high school and that he planned on courting me. He did not pursue it because he realized all the foolishness he has done to me back then, and got scared that he might get dumped.

I was confused by his confession and asked him what took him so long to do such a thing? I thought all along that he liked someone else, and that ours was all about friendship.

When he confessed

He confessed that he’s deeply in love with me and that I was the girl of his dreams. According to him, my simplicity, and my wit made him realized that I was the one.

Oh wow, kilig to the bones si Ate girl… and the rest was history. With the long-distance relationship, we managed to surpass it against all odds.

He’s now an engineer by profession and I am an accountant as well. We have been classmates for four decades, ex-boyfriend /girlfriend for more than 2 decades, and married for more than a decade. And our kilig story continues.

Once in a while, we try to rekindle the past, and this time he asked me, what made me say yes to him, I told him he may not be at the top of the class.

But those “Oh moments” of mine made me realized that one does not need to be at the top to achieve one’s dreams, in your case, I know your perseverance will get you there someday.

Who would've thought I would be marrying the person I hated before? This is what makes our kilig story even more unique. And as the popular song goes, “Love moves in mysterious ways”.
