Kris Aquino on engagement to Mel Sarmiento: "I am proud to be an Aquino, looking forward na kong maging Sarmiento"

Kris Aquino announced on her Instagram that she is now engaged to former DILG secretary Mel Sarmiento, who served under President Noy's administration.

Kris Aquino was all smiles as she stood beside her boyfriend Mel Sarmiento in a video posted on her Instagram account. The TV host-actress announced her engagement to the former DILG secretary in the said posting.

Kris Aquino’s hiatus

In an Instagram post on October 24, Kris posted a series of flower photos and a short video clip with Mel. She wrote in the caption:

“we discussed this post and i thought about it carefully… marami kasi sa followers ko ang nagtatanong kung kamusta na ko because matagal na kong nawala…

aamin ako i’m only 95 pounds now. this pandemic and many stressful events that happened since mid August really caused my weight to drop & my health to suffer.”

Kris, who has been battling an autoimmune disease, had further health problems after the untimely death of her brother, President Benigno “Noy” Aquino III, in June.

Kris’s matchmaker

Kris wrote that the passing of her brother weighed heavily on her.

“And it’s been exactly 4 months since we so unexpectedly lost our brother. Sure ako, ayaw nya talagang iwanan si “bunso” na walang magbabantay at magaalaga na siguradong pinagkakatiwalaan nya.

Somehow i believe there really was a matchmaker in heaven who must be smiling now- i can almost hear his voice telling me, “kristina, tama na, respect the fact na gusto ni Mel ng tahimik na buhay.” And finally, “bunso”has learned to obey.”

Mel was the former DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) secretary during PNoy’s term. He also served as a congressman of Samar and was also the mayor of Calbayog.

Although they had several misunderstandings over the years, Kris believes that her brother Noy was looking out for her.

She wrote: “Thank you to my kuya, kahit wala na sya ramdam na ramdam ko na kahit ilang beses kaming nagkatampuhan, kahit kailan gagawa talaga sya ng paraan na ma-assure kami nila kuya josh at bimb kung gaano nya kami kamahal at hindi talaga sya papayag na ma feel namin na kami ay mapapabayaan. We love you and we miss you.

But THANK YOU, you must have known how broken i’d be to lose you, so you made sure there was someone who not only helped wipe away my tears, he’s made it possible for me to smile and laugh again. Dumating nung hindi ko hinahanap o inaasahan- kaya nga tama silang lahat na nagsabi in God’s perfect time.”

She added: “We would never have met nor reconnected had it not been for Noy.”

Kris ended the post with a message to Mel: “To my best friend and the man i said yes to spending the rest of my life with, thank you for as bimb said loving me for me, with no agenda, and for being just an overall good and patient man. It’s unreal how much more calm & peaceful i feel now that you’re here.”

In her previous posts, Kris was mum on her relationship with Mel. Save for her birthday greeting for Mel in August, she kept everything private.

And it seems that she will be doing the same thing now that she is engaged to Mel.

“We agreed, what’s personal shall remain private so hanggang dito lang ang pwede kong ma share. Except i guess to say as much as i am proud to be an Aquino, looking forward na kong maging Sarmiento.”

Best wishes, Kris and Mel!
