5 Lessons young girls can learn from Taylor Swift's Grammy speech

3 min read

Though america’s sweetheart Taylor Swift has received flak these past few years due to her short-lived romances, she remains to be an icon many young girls look up to.

This is because she is so unapologetically herself. Aside from writing edgy but earnest pop songs that become instant classics, she also stands up for her rights as an artist when she championed the rights of musicians to maintain their ownership of their work, bravely standing up to iTunes and Spotify when she refused to provide her music for free.

When she won Album of the Year for her hugely successful latest record, 1989, Taylor Swift used it as a chance to inspire others (though some would argue that it was mostly a jab at Kanye West who implies that he made swift famous in one of his latest tracks).

Nevertheless, there were key takeaways from her short speech which can inspire young girls to reach for their dreams.

1. Believe in yourself

She is the first female artist to win the Grammy for Album of the Year–twice. And she did not shy away from saying this loud and proud at the 2016 Grammys.

2. Not everyone will be happy about your success

“I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame…”

She goes on to remind women that not everyone they meet on their journey to achieving their dreams will be rooting for them. In fact, there will be those who will go out of their way just to ruin your victories.

3. Do not lose sight of your goal

She urges young dreamers to focus on the work no matter what and not allowing themselves to get sidetracked by haters.

4. Your friends and family matter more than success

She promises that it’ll all be worth it despite the trials when she promises, “…you will look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you that put you there.”

5. Always, always be grateful

Knowing that the support of those who love her helped her achieve her dreams is what Taylor considers
“the greatest feeling in the world”.

Here, she exhibits true gratitude, one that is not grounded on pride but on love.
