Grade 12 student Hillary Diane Angeles has done the Philippines proud! She beat out over 11,000 students from 178 countries and won the prize for the Breakthrough Junior Challenge.
She represented not only the Philippines, but Asia in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge
The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is a competition for students around the world to create videos designed to inspire and encourage creative thinking of various fundamental concepts in life sciences, physics, and mathematics.
Initially, Hillary didn’t make it in the online competition. However, she made it to the finals as the regional representative for Asia where her amazing video won over the judges.
She won a total of $400,00 in prizes
Hillary, a student hailing from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Eastern Visayas Campus in Palo, Leyte was given the award last December 3, in a ceremony at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Ames Research Center in California.
She won the competition by creating a video which simplified the complicated concept of Relativity and Equivalence of Reference Frames into something that the layperson can understand.
Hillary received a $250,000 scholarship, while her teacher received a $50,000 prize. Her school also received a Breakthrough Science Lab which was worth $100,ooo.
Her school has also been constantly putting out winners in international competitions, wherein students from SPHS became the champion in Asean +3 Junior Science Odyssey, World Champion in Robotics in 2016, and now the BJC grand prize in 2017.
The school’s director shares, “Andales has been our school pride. She has imbibed the vision of the school to have a passion for excellence, pursuit for truth, and service to the nation.”
