Vaccines save lives and prevent children from getting diseases that they would otherwise have if they weren’t vaccinated.
But these days, of people called “anti-vaxxers”, have made it clear that they do not want their children to be vaccinated, for one reason or another.
And for one mother, she might soon be facing jail time for refusing to have her son vaccinated.
“This is about choice”
Rebecca Bredow, a mother from Detroit, Michigan, is currently locked in a bitter custody battle with her ex-husband. And one of the points of her disagreement with her husband was regarding their 9-year-old son’s vaccinations.
Her ex-husband was able to get a court order that would force Rebecca to have their son vaccinated or face jail time.
Rebecca shares, “I can’t give in against my own religious belief. This is about choice. This is about having my choices as a mother to be able to make medical choices for my child.”
She adds, “Most likely, I’ll be going to jail on Wednesday.”
She and her husband agreed that their son would no longer take vaccines
When they were both still married, the couple agreed that they would space out their son’s vaccinations for three months after his birth back in 2008. The couple broke up soon after, but Rebecca said that they both agreed in 2010 that they would stop their son’s vaccines entirely.
However, her ex-husband changed his mind about that decision.
She says, “Now I have four and a half business days … to fully vaccinate, they want me to bring him up to the fullest extent medically allowed, which would be up to eight vaccines, in one dose.” Now, she’s worried that her son might suffer from a vaccine injury as a result.
In the United States, the American Academy of Pediatrics share that vaccines are completely safe, and parents should not be worried even if their child takes numerous vaccines in a single dose. However, some states in the US, such as Michigan, allow parents to exempt their child from taking vaccines because of religious or personal reasons.
