Sex during pregnancy: Safe positions per trimester

Dra. Teresita Cardenas, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Veteran's Memorial Medical Center says that having sex during pregnancy is all about keeping the woman comfortable. Read on which positions are great for your specific trimester in this handy but not-safe-for-work gallery.

According to Dra. Teresita Cardenas, head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology over at the Veteran's Memorial Medical Center, pregnancy shouldn't be a reason to stop having sex. Unless your doctor says otherwise, any position that is comfortable for the pregnant woman is the best for the couple.

Congratulations! You may be having morning sickness or experiencing lowered sex drive so you need something with less effort.

Dra. Cardenas says that during the first twelve weeks, couples should exercise caution during intercourse since this is where most miscarriages happen. Bleeding and pain are normal, but a trip to the doctor is always a good idea. But in terms of discomfort, your usual favorite positions are quite all right since the uterus is still small and the baby has not descended.

Whatever you’re feeling, keep in mind that you won’t be able to get full body contact with your hubby until you’ve healed after delivery—so now is the time to get your skinship fix.

Your baby bump has grown and you may be getting your libido back—or better yet, it never left! You have to make some changes for your comfort, especially if you want to get down and dirty in bed.

Pregnancies are less likely to miscarry during the second trimester, but you still have to consult your OB regularly and report your sexual activity (yes, mommies, you have to!).

Dra. Cardenas says that there are no 'best positions' except what keeps you comfy. Having sex does not harm the baby, and the change of position is to help you derive pleasure from the sexual act.

You feel bloated, tired from carrying all that weight and about to burst—and he still wants you badly? Lucky girl! Here are some great positions to do in the months or weeks just before you pop.

Dra. Cardenas adds that parents-to-be shouldn't be afraid that "maiipit yung baby." Changing positions is only there to lessen the discomfort for the pregnant mom.

Keep in mind that you should speak to your doctor before attempting extremely strenuous physical activity. Have your pregnancy checked regularly. As Dra. Cardenas happily advises, though, pregnancy should never be a reason to have less sex.
