Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer March 2015.
Her cancer was made public after she filed a suit against her former business manager Tanner, Mainstain, Glynn & Johnson. Doherty has claimed that the company failed to pay her health premiums, leading to the cancellation of her insurance, thus causing her to not visit a doctor as regularly as she usually did.

When her insurance was reinstated in 2015, her cancer was discovered, but was caught at a later stage. In the court documents, the cancer was described as being “invasive breast cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node.”
