When big sister Jessica met her newborn sister for the first time, something magical happened. Little Venessa begins to cry but big sister assures and calms her down. Simply adorable!
This video is the perfect example of how you should introduce your second baby to your first born. It takes a whole lot of adjustment and preparation, but it can be easy once this initiation is over.
In case you plan to introduce your firstborn to your new baby, here are a couple of things you can try:
- Prepare before the baby comes: Tell your firstborn about the new addition in your family. It’s also a good idea to read a few books that explain how mummy is carrying a baby in her tummy. You can also teach your firstborn to say ‘I love you’ to the newborn.
- Introduce the baby as early as possible: Since you will be away from your first born (delivering the second baby), you should introduce the newborn to your first child as early as possible. Have them touch and hold the newborn, while supervising, of course. This will ensure familiarity and you would be able to see how your first born behaves around the new baby.
- Inform your firstborn about his/her role: As you introduce your firstborn to the new baby, tell her/him about the role they have to play as the elder brother/sister. This will make them feel included and responsible and will automatically inculcate in them a sense of care for the newborn.
- Engage the first born in activities with the newborn: You can also try asking your child to read to the new born or play with him.
While you encourage your first born to bond with the new baby, make sure to also tend to his emotional and psychological needs. Divide your attention equally so that your first born does not feel left out.
