Teen takes terminally ill mother to his high school prom

1 Jun, 2016

Not long ago, Kerry Huffaker was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. The mother and resident of Twin Falls, Idaho was told she would have only 1 to 2 years to live. This came as devastating news to the mother of a high school senior, as she feared she may never be able to see her loving son on his wedding day.

Her son, Dylan, realized that his time with his mother was fleeting and decided to make his terminally ill mother his date to his high school prom.

In traditional prom date fashion, Dylan surprised his date by asking the question in an unexpected, grandiose manner. While his mother received her radiation therapy at the local clinic, Dylan showed up and surprised her with a box of her favorite doughnuts. When she opened the box of delicious confectioneries, she was shocked to see the sweetest prom proposal of all:

ABC News had a chance to speak with Kerry about the prom proposal. “My reaction was, ‘You don’t want to go to prom with your old, bald mom. You’ll be embarrassed.’ And he said,’No I won’t. I’ll have the prettiest date there.'”

“I was taken by surprise, that’s for sure,” Kerry added in her interview with ABC News. “I try not to focus too much on the future. I try to live today as best as I can, but [thought], ‘Who’s going to dance with my son when the mom is supposed to dance with the groom at his wedding day?'”

On the night of the prom, Dylan made a special request. He asked the DJ to play Kerry’s favorite song, “The Dance” by Garth Brooks. Together, a mother and her son shared a memorable dance that neither one will ever forget.

“[The D.J.] cleared the dance floor and let us dance the first half, just me and my mom,” said Dylan. “I put her through 17 years of hard times, so it’s worth it to take her to prom. I love that my mom is as caring as she is. No matter what your going through, she’s willing to help — no matter what hard times she’s facing.”

Only time will tell what will come of this mother and son, but touching stories like this are a humble reminder that love can serve as a powerful medicine to aid any problem you are facing. We wish nothing but the best for the Huffakers and we applaud them for sharing their beautiful story with the world.
