“Then when I saw her ganun na lang yung iyak niya,” John Lloyd Cruz said, recalling his mother’s reaction after watching Honor Thy Father.
The actor, who earned two best actor nominations for his roles in Honor Thy Father and A Second Chance, shared that he wants to win the 2016 Gawad Urian award for best actor. These are the details as reported by Rose Garcia on PEP.ph.

But more than the prestige, Cruz wants to win for sentimental reasons.
According to him, being nominated for the much-coveted award is already an honor in itself, but he would like to win the award for his mother.
“To be perfectly honest, this particular award, this particular nomination, gusto kong manalo (I want to win).
“For the first time, not to validate my performance, gusto ko lang manalo (I just want to win)… it’s a little bit sentimental.”
“I want to win because of my mother,” Cruz told PEP.ph.
Cruz said his mother’s reaction to Honor Thy Father was different, making him feel for the first time that what he did mattered to her.
“All the while I thought parang wala siyang pakialam sa ginagawa ko (she did not care about what I was doing),” he told the entertainment site.

The actor, whose had no experiences in indie films prior to Honor Thy Father, clarified that his mother was clueless about indie films, and only knew about his more commercial films under Star Cinema.
His mother, Cruz said, didn’t ask him about the film, merely calling him up in Baguio during shooting just to ask how he was doing.
“When she saw Honor Thy Father, it was as if it was the first time I saw her really get affected. For that reason alone, when I heard that nomination, yun ang unang-una kong naisip (that’s the first thing that entered my mind).”

“Never kong hiniling na manalo, never kong hinangad na manalo. Although, para sa akin, yung ma-recognize sa nomination, panalo na yun. (I never asked to win, I never dreamed of winning. For me, being recognized and nominated is to win already.)”
“Pero yun nga, for my mom, gusto kong manalo (But for my mom’s sake, I want to win.”)
Cruz, however, did not deny that it feels good to be recognized after all the hard work he put into filming the two entries.
The actor also said he will respect any decision the awarding body will make, adding that what matters most to him as an actor is the body of works that he will leave behind.
“In the end…I’d like to look at my body of work with pride,” he said.
