2016 summer workshops for kids that teach unique and useful life skills

School’s out, now’s the time for your kids to relax and reflect—not! If you’re a parent of a toddler or a gradeschooler a.k.a. little yapping ball of energy, the end of a school year can be a scary day indeed.

With nothing else to do, it’s easy for their curious minds and tinkering hands to get involved in mischief (read: paint the dog pink or feed the hamster marshmallows).

Instead of letting them run around the house like a loose cannon ball when they get bored out of their wits, why not enrol them in summer classes instead?

Music lessons and sports have proven to be very beneficial to a child’s development. Sports teach them the value of teamwork, while music ignites all areas of child development.

They’ll learn a skill or two while keeping them busy and you get your peace at home back. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.

With so many lessons available we’re sure you’ll find something that’ll keep your child occupied. Tired of the usual classes and activities? Here’s a short list of unique ones that are being offered in the country this summer.
Mermaid Classes

Mermaid Classes

This one’s sure to get your pint-sized Ariels screaming in excitement. Get them out of that bath tub and sign them up for real mermaid classes. They’ll get to wear a colorful tail and learn to swim like a little mermaid.

The Mermaid Institute has classes for kids where they teach mermaid exercises and allow tots to have a mermaid/shark play session.

Ninjas rock and your kids know this for sure. Try asking them if they would want to learn how to be a ninja and they’ll want to enrol in a heartbeat. Luckily, there’s a ninja academy that offers classes like parkour and other ‘ninja skills’ in the Philippines.

Ninja Academy, the first of its kind in the Philippines opened its first branch in Pasig in 2014. Now they have expanded to cater to students down South. They recently opened a branch in Las Pinas. The kids’ workshop goes for P4200 for 9 sessions.

Pool Surfing

Did you know that water-loving tots as young as five can learn to ride a wave?

Best part of it all, dear parents, is that it’s done in a controlled environment so you don't have to worry about sudden surges of gigantic waves and scary little sea critters.

The Philippine Surfing Academy holds ‘indoor’ (read: in a pool) surf classes in Club Manila East. The club has a 19,000 square foot giant wave pool that churns out wave patterns.

Speaking of gearing them up for the future, here’s something to get them ready for a future career in engineering.

If your little one loves building lego blocks and miniature structures, why not enrol them in Cambridge’s I.M. Pei’s workshops for kids aged 2 to 12 years old?
The entire module’s a little pricey but the 35 (2-hour) sessions more than makes up for the expense. Besides, if it’d mean having your kids build structures in the future then why not go for it?
