Often, when kids are asked how their day at school was, they'll reply with a grunt, or if you're lucky they'll say "good".

But just knowing that your child's day was good really isn't good enough for you, as a parent, to know if he's doing okay or not.

In order to help you better find out what's going on in your kid's life at school, we came up with this list of alternatives to just "How was your day?"

Do give them a try and let us know how it goes for you.

1. What is the funniest thing that happened today?

Encouraging your child to remember something humorous is a great way to get him to open up. After all. there's nothing like laughter to open the communication lines!

2. What made you really happy today?

Getting your kid to talk about something that made him happy is a good precursor to the next, very important, question...

3. Was there anything that made you sad or upset today?

What your child says in answer to this question will be important to you as parents in figuring out if all is okay with him at school.

4. If you could be your teacher, what would you teach tomorrow?

This fun question is sure to get even the quietest child all chatty, and can pave the way to more questions from you and more answers from your child.

5. What are you excited to learn tomorrow?

Tapping on what excites your child is a great way of getting him to open up to you about his day.

6. What will you do tomorrow that's different from today?

This question is bound to get your child thinking and reflecting on what he could have done better.

7. What was the hardest thing you did today?

This question might work with younger kids who like to complain and whinge sometimes. Once they tell you about what they found hard, you can talk to them about solutions if they find themselves a similar situation again.

8. Who did you play with today?

This is a great question to find out who your kid is hanging out with at school. If he repeats the same name/s every day, then you could also probe to find out why he's not playing with other kids.
