Rashes on breast during pregnancy: What you need to know

The development of rashes on breast is a common dilemma for pregnant moms. Know its causes, treatment and prevention here!

Pregnancy is a beautiful phase in a woman’s life, but it comes with its fair share of challenges. One common issue that women experience during this time is the presence of rashes on breast. And this concern can be uncomfortable and worrying for many women.

In this article, we will be discussing the common causes of rashes on the breast during pregnancy and effective ways to treat them.

What are the causes of breast rashes during pregnancy? Find out here!

Rashes can range from mild to severe and may cause discomfort or pain. This condition can be troubling for pregnant women that is why it is important to understand its causes, as well as steps to take to treat them.

Breast rashes during pregnancy can be caused by a number of factors including:

  • Changes in hormone levels – This occurs during pregnancy and can cause changes in the skin, leading to increased sensitivity and the development of rashes.
  • Irritation from clothing or laundry detergents – Since the skin of a pregnant mom becomes more sensitive, she is prone to skin irritation caused by strong chemicals or fragrance.
  • Excessive sweating – Sweating can lead to growth of unwanted microorganisms and contributes to the development of rashes on skin.
  • Bacterial and fungal growth – Skin under the breast is often moist and warm, providing a perfect environment for bacterial and  fungal growth.

Pregnant women experiencing rashes on the breast should speak with their healthcare provider to rule out any underlying medical conditions or infections.

Treating rashes on breast during pregnancy

Here are some tips for managing and treating rashes on the breast during pregnancy:

  • Apply cool compress to the affected area.
  • Use soap or body wash with gentle formulation.
  • Use mild topical creams and ointments prescribed by a healthcare professional.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing.
  • Try some natural remedies using aloe vera, tea tree oil or oatmeal.
  • Keep the affected area clean and dry.

Prevention

Here are some steps you can follow to help prevent rashes during pregnancy.

  1. Keep the area clean and dry

Ensure to maintain proper hygiene by regularly washing the area with mild soap and water, then drying it thoroughly with a clean towel. This helps prevent the accumulation of sweat and bacteria on the skin that can lead to rashes.

  2. Wear loose-fitting and breathable clothing

Tight clothing and synthetic fabrics can trap moisture and heat, which can cause rashes to form. Opt for loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics such as cotton to keep the skin cool and dry.

  3. Use fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products

Avoid using any personal hygiene products that contain fragrances. These can cause irritation and allergic reactions. Use only hypoallergenic products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin.

  4. Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water can help keep the skin hydrated and prevent dryness and itching.

  5. Moisturize the skin

Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the breasts regularly to keep the skin hydrated.

  6. Avoid scratching

Itchy breasts can be tempting to scratch, but doing so can break the skin and increase the risk of infection. Use a cold compress or apply an anti-itch cream instead.
